The mouth-blown manufacturing process begins by mixing and melting the raw materials. The glass is gathered on the end of a blowpipe and is continually worked and formed into a large cylindrical balloon. A great deal of knowledge, experience and strength are required to work the large glowing balloon of glass. It takes smooth, even movements from a skilled glass master to create a uniform piece. The glass balloon is then cut open at both ends and removed from the blow-pipe. The cooled glass cylinder is scored along its length. The split cylinder is reheated, and as it begins to soften, it is opened and “ironed” into a flat sheet of glass.
