Standing like a calligraphy character expressed in wood, the Edo bench has two grain-matched cherry planks, finely hand-hewn and polished to a butterlike smoothness. The outer plank is gently canted to hold the sitter, while the back rail supports the spine. Reverse-tapered legs give the bench a solid support (no toppling backwards). The rear legs arc gracefully to meet the back rail in a simple gesture of accommodation.
