Bronze

Signed MNG

Circa 1970

Printed label: Sunflower Girl / Michael Gillespie / Cambridge

4/10

A delicate small bronze with all you need expressed in the title ‘Sunflower Girl’ – Expertly made, as a fine caster of bronze Gillespie was sought out by both Jacob Epstein and Elizabeth Frink. The title seems to run contrary to his expressed wish for us not to find 'meaning' in his work but rather to understand how they appear and complement their surroundings – this description would more likely be for his larger works, a number of which can be seen around Cambridge University campus – as here we see expressed a lyrical – music being a touchstone for his work, and for me a mildly humorous evocation of the female form synthesized to become a glorious ‘Sunflower Girl’.
