Description

Founded in 1908 and headquartered in Aarup, Denmark, Carl Hansen & Son is one of Denmark’s oldest producers of quality furniture and the world’s largest producer of furniture designed by Hans J. Wegner. A family-run business since its inception, the company is now led by Carl Hansen’s grandson, Knud Erik Hansen.

  • CH163— Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1965, CH163 is a modern, luxurious sofa with three reversible, down-filled cushions—a revolutionary material for the time period that gave the sofa its original “Down Cushion Sets” name. Constructed in ash, oak, or walnut, CH163 has a simple, wooden frame on elegant angled legs, giving it a silhouette that “fits perfect in a modern home.” Upholstered in fabric or leather, CH163 is a masterpiece of Danish mid-century design. Carl Hansen & Son also manufactures a two-seat version known as CH162.
  • Mogens Koch Bookcase System— Designed by architect Mogens Koch in 1928, the namesake modular bookcase system offers “almost endless flexibility with countless elements.” Featuring beautiful dovetail and rabbet joints, the Mogens Koch Bookcase System provides strength and craftsmanship in every unit. Bookcases can be hung on walls or placed on bases, due to the solid wood’s very thin dimensions. Shelves come in oak or ash, finished in soap, oil, or white oil. MK40880 Bookcase I is a square, reversible unit with six sections that measures 76 x 76 x 27.5 cm. It can be turned on its side to accommodate tall books. MK98400 Deep Bookcase also measures 76 x 76 cm but offers a depth of 36 cm. Its four sections, two slim and two wide, allow for different sized books and objects. The Mogens Koch Bookcase System also includes MK74180, a slim unit with three sections, and MK95800, a narrow unit with four sections.
  • Safari Chair— A design icon, Safari Chair by Kaare Klint debuted in 1933. Simple and functional, Safari Chair was one of the world’s first “build-it-yourself” pieces. Assembled and disassembled without tools, Safari Chair is ideal for nomadic city dwellers and country denizens. Available in oil-treated light or smoked ash with a seat and backrest in four canvas colors or ox hide, Safari Chair is inspired by the simple, functional style of British officer’s chairs that designer Klint saw in a travel guide for Africa.

Known for its Danish craftsmanship and classic functional style, Carl Hansen & Son works with exceptional designers to create pieces designed to last for generations. In 1949, the company began collaborating with then-unknown designer Hans J. Wegner, who produced many of the company’s most iconic furniture in his organic functionalist style.
