As our name suggests, Big Ass Fans isn’t your traditional business. While the quirky name understandably garners a lot of attention, it’s serious work behind the scenes that drives our continued success in industrial, commercial and residential spaces. Headquartered in Lexington, Ky., we design, engineer and manufacture overhead and directional fans that range in size from 60 inches to 24 feet (1.5m to 7.4m) in diameter. Unlike your typical fans, Big Ass Fans couple energy-efficient motors with patented airfoil designs, which are inspired by airplane wings, to move large volumes of air quietly and efficiently.
At the time of the company’s founding in 1999, our first models were designed to bring comfort and safety to farms and factories, which typically lacked air conditioning or any efficient means of comfort. Big Ass Fans’ large team of engineers shifted their focus to silent, lightweight and attractive fans for air-conditioned spaces such as worship facilities, offices, schools and restaurants. In 2012, Big Ass Fans launched Haiku, the reinvention of the home ceiling fan that boasts unprecedented design and a revolutionary energy-efficient motor. Big Ass Fans’ focus on engineering spearheaded its entry into these new markets and serves as a catalyst for all types of innovations in the future.
Whether it’s a 24-ft. diameter fan engineered for industrial applications, a 60-inch diameter fan for your living room or anything in between, each Big Ass Fan is individually inspected and tested to ensure unmatched quality and performance. A testament to that approach is the company’s research and development lab, the world’s only such facility constructed specifically for testing large-diameter fans. Our ISO-certified manufacturing operations are also based in Lexington, where the company has four offices. Beyond those, Big Ass Fans operates regional offices across the United States and internationally in Australia, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
So about that name … our ceiling fans first hit the market in 1999 with the unremarkable brand name “HVLS Fan Company,” a nod to the concept of moving high volumes of air at low speeds. After years of customers referring to the industrial models as big-ass fans, the company adopted the name and our mascot, Fanny the donkey. It’s just one example of how we listen to our customers. Because we listen, we understand your challenges, and we use our engineering expertise to solve them.
