Based in Grand Rapids, MI, American Seating celebrated 125 years in
business in 2011. The company was originally founded as Grand Rapids School Furniture
in 1886 and immediately began its innovative portfolio with the combined student desk
and chair unit, which revolutionized classroom seating. American Seating later developed
other breakthroughs: the tilt-back opera chair in 1893, stadium seating at Fenway Park in
1912, and cantilevered bus seats in the 1950s.
