Perry Screen

The Perry Screen, built originally as a one-of-a-kind studio piece by David Moser for his wife, is named in honor of Commodore Perry, who opened up the trade corridor between the East and West in 1853. This expansion is reflected in the emergent influence of Japanese design at that time and the popularity of screens during the Victorian era. Screens have been used historically for privacy and decoration, with the first folding screens dating back to the 8th century in China. These original screens were meant to function as permanent room dividers and were crafted from heavy wood panels held together by leather thongs. The sizeable surface area became the ideal canvas for carved and drawn images?an art form that matured when the use of folding screens migrated to Japan. They became more flexible and lightweight with the addition of paper and paper hinges, each paper panel a potential masterpiece in its own right. After this piece appeared in several of our catalogs as a backdrop, we responded to the urgings of our customers by adding this room divider to our line.
